Nathaniel’s daugher Enable makes history with Breeders’ Cup and Arc double

03/11/2018

Nathaniel’s daughter Enable made history today in becoming the first horse to win the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup double in the same year for owner/breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah.

Succeeding where others great horses have failed including Dancing Brave, Dylan Thomas, Found, Golden Horn, Sakhee, Saumarez, Subotica and Trempolino.

The queen of European racing was given a confident ride in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf by Frankie Dettori, who sat her just off the pace and angled her wide before the turn for home.  From there, fellow European raider Magical provided the biggest threat, but Enable was very much able to dismiss her, powering home for a decisive victory.

Trainer John Gosden said: “It was a big ask of the filly as everyone knows she has had a difficult year.  Full marks to the filly.  She’s been very brave and mentally very strong to get herself here.  She did it today with sheer guts and determination.”

Dettori, winning his fifth Turf, exclaimed: “She’s conquered America and is the first one to do it!  We had the rain and her wheels were spinning around the bends, so I took her wide to get the fresh ground and she got comfortable and found another gear. She’s amazing. She’s very special.”

This all-time great four-year-old filly has now won seven Gr.1 races across four countries, also including back-to-back victories in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Gr.1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and three Gr.1 Oaks races.

Teddy Grimthorpe, Abdullah’s racing manager, said: “Everything that has gone into this year has been an emotional rollercoaster and for Prince Khalid to have a fourth-generation bred filly do this and make history is special.”

Enable is out of the Juddmonte Farms’ Stakes winning mare Concentric, also the dam of Gr.2 Prix de Pomone and Gr.3 Prix Allez France-placed Contribution.  Out of the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont winer Apogee, Concentric is a full-sister to the Gr.2 Prix de Royallieudam winner Dance Routine.  She in turn produced the multiple top-level scorer and champion Flintshire.

Nathaniel has enjoyed another great year following on from the success of his first Classic crop in 2017, led by the incomparable Enable, and has sired 10 Group or Stakes winners in 2018 to date (6 Group and 4 Stakes winners).  Nathaniel’s first two crops include 22 Group or Stakes horses, and 32 have a RPR of 95 or higher (18 colts and 14 fillies).  Bred for greatness indeed!
