The Newsells bred two-year-old Japan rises to the occasion with a Gr.2 victory

Newsells Park Stud’s excellent year continued with Japan winning the Gr.2 Beresford Stakes at Naas yesterday for trainer Aidan O’Brien and owners Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor.

A full-brother to the Gr.1 Oaks and Gr.1 Preis der Diana runner-up Secret Gesture and high-class Gr.3 winner Sir Isaac Newton, this exciting two-year-old colt by Galileo got up on the line to win by a short head.

Previous winners of this race have gone onto Gr.1 success including Capri,Saxon Warrior, Sea The Stars and St Nicholas Abbey.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “We thought he’d come forward from Listowel.  He followed the pace and found plenty when he had to.  He’s a big, hardy colt who should progress again.  The Vertem Futurity is a race he could go for.”

Bred and raised by Newsells out of the Stakes winning mare Shastye (Danehill), Japan was sold by the stud last year at the Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale for 1,300,000gns.  MV Magnier also purchased his full-brother Sir Isaac Newton for 3.6m gns in 2013.  From the family of Sagamix and Sagacity, Shastye is also the dam of Stakes winner Maurus (Medicean).
