Exciting Classic prospect for Nathaniel

23/06/2024

The four-year-old son of Nathaniel, Harbour Wind, added more black-type to his form yesterday with a gutsy victory in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Martin Molony Stakes at Limerick on his 2024 debut for owner/breeder Moyglare Stud Farm.

Trainer Dermot Weld said “It was a workmanlike, battling performance under a very good ride from Chris Hayes. He is a very tough horse. The trip was a little on the short side but good to start him off. He’ll be sharper for that.

We’ll see how he comes out of the race and discuss future plans with the owner as to where we go next. The route to the Irish St Leger would be a very logical way to go with him.”

Last year Harbour Wind won the Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown and followed this up with a credible second in the Gr.2 Qatar Prix Chaudenay at Longchamp in September.

He looks to be an exciting stayer to follow this season, and has won or been placed second in all his six runs to date.

Harbour Wind is out of the winning Pivotal mare Topaz Clear, a half-sister to the Gr.2 Long Distance Cup and Gr.3 Vintage Crop Stakes winner and Gr.1 Gold Cup placed Forgotten Rules, and Stakes winner Vintage Nouveau.

Nathaniel has now sired 73 Stakes horses including 8 Gr.1 winners, most notably 11-time Gr.1 winner Enable and the 2022 Classic Gr.1 Epsom Derby victor Desert Crown.
