A new Gr.2 winner for Equiano with Belvior Bay

29/05/2018

Equiano’s daughter Belvoir Bay powered clear of her opposition to win the Gr.2 Monrovia Stakes in the USA yesterday for trainer Peter Miller, her seventh Stakes success!

It was also her third straight Stakes race down the hill at Santa Anita and the 300th Stakes win for her owner the Team Valor partnerships.   The exceptionally tough filly surged through a narrow seam and grabbed the lead before scampering clear to the wire in this 6.5f sprint.

Just a month ago Belvioir Bay won the Gr.3 San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita which followed victory in the Mizdirection Stakes at Santa Anita, her first outing since surviving the fires at the San Luis Rey Downs training facility in San Diego in December 2017.  She has also won the Gr.3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at the Breeders Cup, as well as the Gr.3 Torrey Pines Stakes and the Listed Unzip Me Stakes and Blue Norther Stakes.

Bred in Britain, Belvoir Bay is another top-class mare from the breeding legacy of the late Mrs Peacock.  She is out of Path of Peace (Rock of Gibraltar), a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Please Sing (Royal Applause) and Gr.1 placed Mountain Song (Tirol), and from the family of 1985 Gr.1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Bold Arrangement.  As a yearling she was purchased by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock at the Tattersalls October Sales in 2014.

Her sire Equiano is currently the leading sire of sprinters and milers in Europe in 2018 by winners (3yo+, 1000m-1800m www.stallionguide.com) and the sire of 23 Stakes horses.  His Stakes horses include the dual Gr.1 sprinter The Tin Man who bids for his third consecutive Gr.1 Ascot win at Royal Ascot in a few weeks, and Equilateral, a leading contender for the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

It’s not too late to book a late cover for your mare with this Newsells Park Stud stallion, indeed Equilateral was born in May!
