The Newsells bred Japan gained his second Gr.1 victory in landing the Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York today, with a gutsy defeat of the highest-rated Flat horse in training Crystal Ocean.

This three-year-old colt was following up his success in the Gr.1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp last month for trainer Aidan O’Brien and owners Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier and Micheal Tabor.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “He’s a very exciting horse. The race we were thinking of after this was the Irish Champion Stakes. The Arc and the Breeders’ Cup are also possibilities.”

Jockey Ryan Moore said: “All Japan has done is improve since the Dante. He had to try so hard and ran all the way to the line. He’s very progressive. It was a superb performance.”

Japan has also won this season the Gr.2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, and finished third in the Gr.1 Epsom Derby. As a two-year-old he won the Gr.2 Beresford Stakes at Naas.
